Psychogeriatric Neuroimaging

title Neuroimaging in Old Age Psychiatry
description This is really something. A one-paragraph transcript caption linked to 30 seconds of on demand video, synched with PowerPoint and subtitle links in the sidebar in an enhanced learning portal for a day-long workshop (quizzes at the end). Seamless clicking from slide to slide/video to video between different parts of a talk and even different talks. (Sadly, the text is not searchable, and worse, it's IE only, so the quest for best new media goes on.) Dozens of MRI, CT, SPECT, diffusion tensor and other types of images of brains with discussion of imaging techniques and the impact on research. Awesome.

DBS Neurosurgery

[Image: portrait of Mark Niessner, who has a fun and lively patient diary about his DBS experience, including some videos. Not involved with the vodcast below.]

title i on NIH Vodcast Episode #0006
description A US government vodcast complete with transcript, though it's not indexed to the video. A National Institutes of Health (NIH) co-worker developed Parkinson's Disorder, and is featured in a third segment interview. "Host Joe Balintfy: Often promoting the importance of medical research through the NIH Radio News Service and NIH Research Radio Podcast, Bill made the decision to volunteer for a clinical trial, and was selected for the surgical treatment: DBS, which is major brain surgery." He and his neurosurgeon then describe the surgery. Dr. Pancrazio says, "But it really is something that’s very new, it’s something that, you know, our society has a lot of questions about. What does it mean for us and it’s something that I think that every patient who’s participating in a trial is a pioneer." The final segment of the vodcast interviews an NIMH researcher about stress.

Inspiration

title Jill Bolte Taylor: My stroke of insight
description Horray! I've been waiting for this since I found out she'd be at TED, and I'm not disappointed. Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroscientist who had a stroke, recovered creatively by making stained glass brains, gained insights on emotions and time and wrote a terrific memoir about it all. At TED she shares lessons learned through her altered perceptions (most importantly, being in the moment). This is a great, inspiring talk that received a standing ovation.

Neuroscience for Kids in Motion

Image: from Neuroscience for Kids. I put together a puzzle to get the larger image, an ecard, from a thumbnail. Check out more puzzles and ecards, many created for this Brain Awareness Week.

title BrainWorks
description "With the help of five kids, host Eric Chudler [of the awesome, award-winning Neuroscience for Kids web site] takes viewers on a journey inside of the brain. The show begins in the studio with an introduction to the nervous system. The kids then visit laboratories where they learn about automatic functions of the brain and how the electrical activity of the brain is recorded. Back in the studio, the kids see a real human brain and build their own model nerve cells and brains." Exuberent science education. Info is aimed at adolescents, in an introduction to the brain with many statistics, demos, and fun primitive visualizations with balloons and clay.

Neuroethical Decisions

title Decisions, Responsibility and the Brain
description 12th annual lecture, for a general audience, features a MacArthur prize-winning neurophilosopher on new questions of ethics, law and free will that accompany neuroscientific discoveries (especially concerning impulse control). "Understanding how the brain works is essential to understanding the mind," says Churchland. "Questions concerning what free choice really amounts to have long been at the center of philosophical reflection. New discoveries, especially those revealing the role of specific neurochemicals and those addressing the nature of impulse-control, lend a special and very practical urgency." Press release.
